Full home restoration of a period property in West End Glasgow

Located in the west-end of Glasgow, this beautiful Victorian home was bought as a virtually derelict shell, untouched for years which required a comprehensive strip out and refurbishment. This project took 14 months from planning, building, internal bespoke cabinetry to finishing touches. The result is an elegant, timeless, warm and cosy family home which has stood the test of time.

Maxwells brings a combination of architectural detail and design flair and understanding to ensure we can provide the finest interiors for a home. This project is a classic example of how skills dating back centuries can be applied to bring an old property up to date but still be true to its original intended form.

We restored every corner of this space. An extensive survey required repointing of stonework, repair to the roof, landscaping, addressing various areas of water ingress. Some of the Victorian panelling, door frames and windows had perished over the years. With the building side busy on the clearing, ripping out and prepping of the new spaces, addressing damp ingress, pulling out floorboards, our workshop was busy creating identical moulds of the existing features to extend them to other areas of the house. Our electricians carried out a full rewire of the property. Our plumbing team ensured all the plumbing was secure and renewed where necessary.

The stunning hanging gantry in the kitchen weighed half a tonne! We reinforced the kitchen ceiling to ensure the structural stability of this feature. We also planned a quiet ventilation system for the kitchen extraction by locating the main extraction away from the kitchen.

Additional zones were created in the basement for a TV hang out area, a utility and a gym.

Our workshop manufactured various pieces of cabinetry, period style architraves, period pocket sliding doors, door frames, wall panelling, bay window details to restore this once glorious house to its original beauty.

The old dark pine stairs were painted in a light colour for a more open feel. We stained some of the original floorboards to a dark colour for a more dramatic feel. We installed new fireplaces, wood burning stoves, wooden parquet and tile flooring, underfloor heating – this to-do list was endless yet exciting!

We were also commissioned by another family member after this renovation for a few other projects.
